Brown fox stood on the river bank
Knowing he could make it across
He knew though if he caught a rock
He would trip and be lost
Grey rabbit stood nearby
Watching the water roll down
He knew the river was too fast for him
If he tried to cross he would drown
Brown fox looked at rabbit
Said if you stand on that box
You can be lookout for me
So I don’t bump into any rocks
Yes I could do that said rabbit
But then I will be left here
Standing on this box alone
While my friends are over there
Okay then said brown fox
Glaring at rabbit with eyes wide
Hop on my back keep watch for the rocks
I will take you to the other side
But grey rabbit was a wise old rabbit
And in foxys eyes he could see
That once they got to the other side
Brown fox would have him for tea
So grey rabbit hopped on his back
Because he had a plan of his own
He would not tell him of the very last rock
Then he could jump off and run home
So into the water they went
With grey rabbit holding on tight
Brown fox swimming for his very life
Rabbit shouting, go left, go right
As they neared the opposite side
The last rock caught foxys flank
He stumbled to regain his balance
Grey rabbit jumped onto the bank
Brown fox lunged out of the water
His teeth snapping at grey rabbit’s fur
But rabbit was quick he scampered away
Through the bushes and into his lair
Grey rabbit now was safe
Snuggled down in his den
On the right side of the river
Back with his friends again
Brown fox shook himself dry
No food and all of a shiver
I’ll have to find a meal somewhere else
At least I’m over the river
So he trotted off home
To gnaw on a bone in sorrow
Then he perked up things aren’t that bad
I could catch me a rabbit tomorrow | |
