Be careful Sydney slug
Said Sammy spider in the tree
I am trying to spin my web
You are making it hard you see
You’re leaving slime on the branches
Just like Sybil snail
I can’t fix my web to it
Now I will have to use a nail
That’s not a proper spider’s web
Using nails and a hammer
Sydney shouted back
With a stutter and a stammer
House spiders don’t use nails
Quipped Eric earwig eating a biscuit
Yes but they live indoors replied Sammy
It don’t wind and rain in there does it
It’s in the wrong place anyway
Said Harold the hairy caterpillar
There’s to many leaves around it
It needs to be in the open, fella
Well I am the one who’s making it
Because spiders do that you see
And we always put them on branches
In a hedge or on a tree
Yes but spiders don’t nail them on
Said Doug the dragonfly
Well I am doing it this way
And that’s the reason why
Then Willy the wasp piped up
With his legs crossed on a twig
I think you’re doing a fine job Sammy
Although it’s not very big
By the way Eric said Willy smiling
Can I have a bite of your biscuit
No it’s my last one replied Eric
And I’ve licked all the chocolate of it
I think it’s big enough to sleep in
On looking at it from here
Observed Dougie dragonfly
Not wanting to interfere
I’me sliding about squeaked Sammy
It’s slippery all over the place
I have to fix it securely
Or I could fall out and land on my face
Yes but have you considered
Piped up Martha the moth
All of us who fly at night
Could bump into it and knock it off
That’s why I am building it in the leaves
Where no one fly’s at night
I don’t want you crashing into it
And giving me a fright
It’s certainly a very nice shape
Eric the earwig spoke quietly
I can see where you are going with it
But nails would look rather unsightly
Maybe you could tie it with string
Piped up Boris beetle
You see string is recyclable
Take it with you when you travel
Ah but some string is different to others
Willy the wasp piped up
Sat down with his legs still crossed
Sipping tea out of Boris’s cup
All strings the same said Boris
No it’s not said Gertie grasshopper
Some is made of wood and plastic
And some is made of paper
Excuse me a moment smiled Willy
Do you have more sugar for this tea
Leave my cup alone shouted Boris
Or I’ll flip you out of this tree
Behave yourself Willy whispered Lucy
And I’ll take you to get free honey
That’s hard work from flowers Willy moaned
I’d go to the shop but I don’t have any money
If you knock nails in the branches
Then you cant pull them out
What happens then said Arthur ant
Now Sammy was having some doubt
We need to have a discussion about this
Said fearless Frosty the fly
How many ways to secure a web
And all the reasons why
Well said Gertie grasshopper
There’s nails and string and hooks
And glue and screws I think
I read this in one of my books
Why do you need to make a web
Sydney slug spoke out
Because its what spiders do
They like to mess about
Well we don’t need to make webs
Lucy ladybird pouted
You’re not a spider Sammy moaned
I think Ime going to bed
You could sit on one of the branches
With your legs crossed like me
Willy the wasp giggled
Which one do I cross I’ve got eight said Sammy
You could sit on four and cross four
Hairy caterpillar said smirking
Or you could hold on with two and cross three
It’s just a matter of learning
Right said Sammy if I use nails
I might not be able to pull them free
And if I use sticky glue
I could get stuck to the tree
We all need to be nature friendly
So I am going to use string
I can tie it up or take it down
The insect mob began to sing
Sammy spiders making his web
Hes using friendly string
He can tie it up or take it down
Ding a ling a ling
That’s not very funny
Eric earwig quietly spoke
You lot are always messing about
It’s getting beyond a joke
Chill out now Eric said Harold
As he tapped him on his snippers
We are only having a laugh
By the way there’s a hole in one of your slippers
Well that’s okay grumbled Eric
I haven’t got as many feet as you
When you get a hole in yours
You’ll have to buy twenty pairs of shoes
I’ve finished it Sammy spider shouted
Come and have a look
So the insect mob inspected it
To make sure it was stuck
Arthur ant jumped in it
And said its bouncy where I am
But then again I am only small
And weigh less than one gram
I’ll try it said Gertie grasshopper
And bounced right out of the web
Well that’s clever said Eric
That’s because you’ve got springy legs
I ‘me not going to go in it
Whispered fearless frosty the fly
Sammy might leave me stuck in there
Cos I ate his last mince pie
Off course he’ll let you out
Lucy ladybird laughed
We’re all going to test it
To see if it’s strong enough
So one at a time the insect mob
Jumped in and out of Sammy’s web
They all agreed it was brilliant
The best one he’s made yet
Just then it started to rain
And they all had to go indoors
Because even insects don’t like to get wet
So they snuggled down in some straw
What can we do tomorrow
Dougie dragonfly sighed
If its raining we’re staying in
They all with one voice replied
So if you see the insect mob
Anywhere anytime
Please leave them alone and let them play
Because they like to have a good time
