Short Life.
Here I lay without my friends
I left them all in no mans land
My soul is there watching over them
Lain upon this cottage bed
My bandage white and speckled red
The padre saying we will overcome

I look into his unknown face
My pain masked in sweet embrace
I smile as he signs the cross
The silent nurse holds my hand
I feel her heartbeat soft and kind
Drifting words say such a loss

My mind says do not weep
For I am only going to sleep
There are those who need you more than I
I am not scared as before
Trembling with shell shocked awe
As each blast emitted its pitiful cry

There are no words I have to say
Its time for me to slip away
Do not grieve for me when I am gone
It’s done now there’s no excuse
I turn this loving body loose
My time here is short yet done

We will meet down in the valley
Near Carmarthen my sweet sally
Where the air is fresh we spent our younger days
We’ll laugh and play the birds will sing
An ode to us in new born spring
Never again will death take me away
