Sauntering back to the farm
In the misty morning rain
Five hundred soldiers marched past laughing
We watched them round a bend in the lane
They whistled we’re off now boys
To the Somme in France
We’re going to hit old Fritz
Give him a merry old dance
Sauntering back to the farm years later
In the misty evening rain
Five stooped soldiers ambled past
Round a bend in the lane
Did you go to the Somme in France
We shouted, we have not heard
Did you make old Fritz dance
They never said a word
