First Patrol.
Leave me now
My life is low
I feel no pain
From such a blow

Good friends we are
And will remain
Go back be quick
Do not speak again

There is a lull now
Go find your way
There is no need
For you to stay

What use would be
That both should perish
You make it back
And life be cherished

The barrage is slowing
Enemy is over the line
Here take this ring
Give it to Caroline

Tell her I am sorry
I tried my best
To stay alive
Not to be I guess

Go brother
Go now be brave
Braver than I
Do not look back, wave

Now alone
In this shell hole
Blood and mud soaked
My first patrol

The shelling has stopped
I hear movement around
Shadowy figures
Peering over looking down

They’re pointing at me
I raise my hand
I see flashes of light
From where they stand

Crack crack, crack crack
I hear no more
Another casualty
Of the war
